Special exhibition Highlights of GICB2017 presents major works from the thematic exhibitions in Icheon and Gwangju held during the GICB2017, which itself ran from April 22 to May 28 under the theme of “Narrative: Ode to Life,” allowing visitors to appreciate them at one place.
Using stories about people’s lives as the main motif, GICB2017 served as a forum to explore people’s actual lives including their everyday living and dreams, history, culture, and politics through narrative ceramic artifacts that have been unfolded from the distant past and contemporary ceramics, and to look back on the interrelationship between humans and ceramic art.
Also, rather than following its precedents that addressed broad, grand subjects as themes and instead by focusing on a specific theme of narrative forms, GICB2017 spurred discussion on setting a theme for a biennale and the direction to be pursued.
This exhibition rearranged works by masters overseas who pioneered and established narrative ceramics, artists both from home and abroad who are very active today, and Korean and Japanese artists who adapted narratives of artifacts to modernity that were displayed at the thematic exhibitions at the Icheon World Ceramic Center and the Gwangju Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum. This exhibition will give viewers an opportunity to experience many stories about people's lives and reflect on diversity and the meaning of life as they see works ‘singing about life in the unique languages of artists.’
