In the current landscape of ceramics in which individual freedom and diversity beyond media and form are valued, summing up and categorizing the trend of Korean contemporary ceramic art is extremely difficult. The world has become one single market due to high-speed globalization. Techniques and forms of expression have become manifold, while fewer and fewer artworks reflect tradition and regionality. Now, defining contemporary ceramic trends geographically has become obsolete.
Nonetheless, the reason why Korean traditional ceramic art still has a place in Korean contemporary ceramic discourse is that many artists’ works are rooted and find meaning in tradition, even today when things have become more complex and diverse. Such attempts can be seen as elements of individuality in contemporary ceramics.
Korean contemporary ceramic trends can be divided into many groups depending on the perspective. This exhibition explores the unique characteristics of Korean contemporary ceramic art within the contexts of traditional and contemporary ceramic art, different styles, and techniques. Viewers can encounter ceramic artists who reflect the traditional techniques and ceramic spirit in their work through different methods and expressions, as well as those who take on a more experimental attitude and pose questions about the concept of tradition.
