Gonjiam Ceramic Park is in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do province, home to the royal kilns that produced white porcelain for the royal household during the Joseon dynasty. It covers an area of 440,000㎡. In the park is Sam-ri Historic Site from the Old Stone Age Era, which tells stories about the history and tradition from the Paleolithic Era up to today.
Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum is the centerpiece of Gonjiam Ceramic Park. It presents permanent exhibitions on ceramics from ancient times, when ceramics were first made in Korea, to modern times. Many other facilities are open year round, including Mosaic Park, Traditional Craft Studio, a ceramics shopping mall, a sculpture park, and a gallery café. Visitors can take classes featuring hands-on activities and enjoy outdoor performances. Gonjiam Ceramic Park is truly a multiple cultural complex that serves various functions such as learning about traditional culture, education through hands-on activities, as well as recreation and rest.
In September 2019, Gonjiam Ceramic Park opens anew as a ceramics theme park. It will be recreated as a rest place in nature built with waste ceramics. There will be a promenade, picnic garden, and eye-catching benches, all made of ceramics. With the creation of the Ceramic Flower Garden and a beautifully landscaped garden, and newly installed lighting, Gonjiam Ceramic Park will become a major tourist attraction.
