The first Biennale was held in 2001 with the ambition to make the Icheon World Ceramic Center a mecca for contemporary ceramic art.

Under the theme of ‘Shaping the Future with Earth,’
the first Biennale largely consisted of the International Competition, Invitational Exhibitions, International Ceramic Workshop, and International Ceramic Symposium.
