The special exhibition Contemporary Eastern European Ceramics presents contemporary ceramic art of Eastern Europe through selected works in the collection of Icheon World Ceramic Center. Contemporary ceramics is diversifying all over the world. And yet, the region and society where an artist was born and grew up remains an important factor in the artist's works and helps the audience understand them.
Eastern Europe has a very distinct identity. History has unfolded there very differently compared to Western Europe, and Eastern Europe boasts its own unique cultures. However, we are all still relatively unfamiliar with Eastern Europe, even in this day and age when international travel is becoming an ordinary thing and cultures are becoming globalized. It has long been overshadowed by Western Europe. The Koreans still consider Eastern Europe strange and unfamiliar.
Thankfully, light is now at last being shed on the cultures and art of Eastern European countries, and more Korean tourists are visiting Eastern Europe and exhibitions of Eastern European art are being held in Korea.
We have arranged this exhibition to appreciate the cultures and charms of Eastern Europe through ceramic works from the region. We are specifically directing attention to contemporary ceramics by Eastern European artists in the collection of the Korea Ceramic Foundation.
This exhibition defines Eastern Europe as ‘European regions east of Germany including Russia’ in general and regional scope, and it shows ceramic works from countries in that region. Presented here are seventy-four pieces from fifteen countries, including countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Southeastern Europe, and former Soviet republics. We hope you enjoy these diverse ceramic works as if you are on a trip to a new place.
