Reviewing the Collection from Past Biennales
The largest proportion of overseas artworks in the collection of the GMoCCA has been secured through the award-winning works and donations from the international competitions of the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale. In commemoration of the 2024 Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale, we guide visitors through an exhibition showcasing the major award-winning works from past biennales and donated works exhibited in the permanent collection exhibition.
《Odyssey of Contemporary Ceramic Art》 introduces the beginning of 20th-century contemporary ceramics, which departed from pre-modern ceramic craftsmanship and established ceramics as art, showcasing various expressions of contemporary ceramics today. Organized into three parts, this exhibition composed of the GMoCCA's collection is structured as follows. Part 1, “Clay: The Prelude to Contemporary Ceramics,” focuses on the dawn of Korean contemporary ceramics and pioneer works, presenting archival materials alongside influential works from the United States and Japan that have significantly contributed to the development of global contemporary ceramics. Continuing into the diverse trends of 21st-century contemporary ceramics based on the characteristics of the museum's collection, Part 2, “Clay: Material and Formative Language,” and Part 3, “Clay: Exploring and Investigating Contemporary Ceramics,” categorize into themes and introduce a variety of artworks that feature the material characteristics and formative imagination unique to ceramic art, as well as those that transcend genre boundaries and expand the field of ceramics. Through understanding ceramics as an art form centered around clay, we hope this exhibition opens pathways to contemplate tomorrow's contemporary ceramics.
