The special exhibition Great Heritage: Past, Present, Future has been arranged to present masterpieces in the collection of KOCEF acquired for over the last 19 years and to look back at the history of ceramic art, which has developed as an independent genre of fine art.
This exhibition aspires to suggest the direction in which contemporary ceramic art should proceed by connecting works in the collection of KOCEF that represent the past with digital media that represent the future.
The exhibition consists of three parts.
Part 1: Container introduces functional containers, the fundamental form of ceramics.
Part 2: Ceramic Sculpture introduces abstract and figurative sculptures. Particularly noteworthy is Penryn by the late Peter Voulkos, an iconic contemporary abstract ceramic artist who opened a new era for ceramics as fine art by merging painting into ceramics. KOCEF is the sole holder of Penryn in Korea.
Part 3: Contemporary Ceramics sheds light on works that reveal contemporary characteristics, such as installations, multi-media works, and video artworks.
This exhibition will be a very rare opportunity for the visitors to see works of great value from the perspective of art history, such as Cormorants by Rudy Autio, Black Spear by John Mason, Paint Box Man (tin tin) by Richard Shaw, and Peggy's Jacket by Marilyn Levine, not to mention work by Peter Voulkos, at one place in Korea.
