The final installment of 100 Korean Ceramic Artists, the representative invitational exhibition series of the Gyeonggi Museum of Ceramic Design (GMCD), is now on view. Since the series was first launched in 2012, one or two installments have been held annually to introduce 100 Korean ceramists in a relay format. This decade-plus journey, which has steadily progressed one exhibition at a time, has given a sense of historicity to the series. There is a saying that goes, “The path of persistence is fraught with greater obstacles than the path of simple diligence.” As this saying implies, it is the power of persistence that has established 100 Korean Ceramic Artists as GMCD’s foremost special exhibition series. Continuing its longstanding legacy, made possible over the years through the diverse efforts of various planners, our final installment will introduce major Korean ceramic artists while conveying the craft value of ceramic art in a way that encapsulates the identity of GMCD.
Our museum seeks to expand the horizon of ceramics from the perspective of ceramic art, by striving to break their confining image as kitchen items and realize the motto “ceramic art in daily life.” To this end, our exhibition will center around the display of objets d'art rather than the typical display of tableware. This final installment will bring together the works of seven artists, who each work with different mediums and techniques such as earthenware, white porcelain, celadon, casting, objets d'art, and installations. Their diverse artworks will encourage the audience to break away from the limiting stereotype that everyday ceramics equal daily tableware while, at the same time, broadening their notion of ceramic art to include everyday ceramics. We hope that visitors discover the true essence of ceramic art through our exhibition as they explore its uncharted charm in a warm and welcoming way.
