Clay meeting lacquer
You can see Ahn Byeong-jin’s new works at the exhibition Ceramics & Lacquered Crafts by Ahn Byeong-jin.
The coarse surfaces of ceramic objects are covered with diverse decorative materials such as lacquer, gilt, and mother-of-pearl to emit color unique to each material, making the object all the more attractive and alluring.
The colors of lacquer, mother-of-pearl, and gilt matching the color of clay are entirely appropriate for the beautiful autumn scenery. Come see and enjoy the exhibition.
“Three years have passed since I started learning how to apply lacquer. It may be that three years of learning is rather short to have an exhibition. Even so, I am so excited to challenge myself with new work.
I shaped a jar with clay and fired it in a kiln. After firing, I applied lacquer, mother-of-pearl, and gilt on the surface to get new results. I would not say that I am satisfied with the works presented here. I would rather think this is my first step in an attempt at something completely new and different.” _ Artist statement by Ahn Byeong-jin
