Ceramic Masterpieces by Five Masters of Gwangju 2012

Gwangju in Gyeonggi-do Province produced good quality clay and had an abundance of firing wood. This and its close proximity to Seoul made Gwangju a major producer of ceramics and a leader in the ceramic culture of Joseon. Some 340 white porcelain kiln sites throughout Gwangju, which collectively are designated as National Historic Site No. 314, show the history of the royal kilns which produced ceramics for royal use for the five hundred years of the Joseon period.

This area produced the best quality ceramics, and its tradition has been upheld to this day, keeping the history of Korean ceramics alive. At present, some one hundred potters are actively working at seventy kilns, producing diverse kinds of ceramics including celadon, buncheong, and porcelain.

In celebration of the 15th Gwangju Royal Ceramics Festival, Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum has arranged Ceramic Masterpieces by Five Masters of Gwangju. Representing the ceramics producers of Gwangju, four Masters of Gwangju Royal Ceramics - Park Bu-won, Yi Gwang, Yang Myeong-hwan, Han Il-sang - and Bak Sang-jin, Master of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Gyeonggi-do Province, are presented. Their works, each of which has individuality, are fruits of strenuous efforts based on very old, deeply rooted tradition. They will allow visitors to see and feel the excellence and beauty of Korean ceramics of Gwangju.

Works by these masters are available for sale, and a certain portion of the sales revenue will be donated to charity for the underprivileged of Gwangju.
